About
First Known Use is a Burlington-VT based band created by Izze Kaukonen and Ethan Fitzpatrick.
The First Known Use moniker is derived from the idea that us as musicians are not the source material for our music; songs are something which exist outside of us. The process of writing, recording, and playing is a process of capture and translation, not creation.
First Known Use aims to capture music rife with inquisition and flirtatious with experimentation, brought by sounds both new and warmly inviting. The project extends itself beyond what is familiar, while harping upon sounds that feel like home.
The project is synthesis of Kaukonen’s buttery vocals, delicate yet assertive lyricism, and Fitzpatrick’s laid back, contemporary guitar and dynamic arrangements. The duo aims to put a magnifying glass on the cracks and crevices of the human experience, poking and prodding at moments often left stagnant in memory.
The duo executes the writing, playing, and recording process from home, though the project is anything but insular. Music is another language with which to communicate, so their relationship with music is just as much a way to share oneself with the world as it is to explore and understand it.
